William and Kate to make Kensington Palace their London home

Britain's Prince William and his new wife, Catherine, will make an apartment in Kensington Palace their new home while in London, it was officially announced Monday.

However, the newlyweds, who enjoyed a top-secret honeymoon in the Seychelles after their April 29 London wedding, would continue to live primarily in a cottage on the island of Anglesey, in Wales, where William is a Royal Air Force (RAF) search-and-rescue pilot, DPA reported.

Kensington Palace, a red-brick 17th century mansion in the middle of Kensington Gardens, was home to William and his younger brother, Harry, after the divorce of their parents - Prince Charles and Princess Diana - in 1996.

However, while the palace may hold many memories for William, the newlyweds would not move into the apartment in which Diana lived until her 1997 death in a car crash in Paris, a spokesman made clear. William and Catherine, now officially known as the duke and duchess of Cambridge, are set to move into their new home later this month, or in July.

However, a spokesman for Prince William stressed that the couple's new London residence would be temporary, and that "options for longer-term solutions" were still being sought.

In the last few months, the couple have been sharing an apartment with Harry at another London royal palace, but their move to Kensington Palace is likely to give them more privacy.

Kensington Palace, where Queen Victoria once lived, became a magnet for mourners after Diana's premature death. A much-visited memorial fountain for the late princess is just a stone's throw away.
