Iran exports $74 M worth of agricultural products via Astara

Some 109,110 tons of agricultural products worth over $74.6 million were exported were exported from customs of Iran's north western city of Astara in the first eight months of the current fiscal year(March 21-Nov. 21), an Iranian official said.

Azerbaijan, Russia, Georgia and Ukraine as well as Central Asian countries were the main destinations for the exported products, Iraj Shalikar, an official with the agriculture ministry said, the Iranian official IRNA News Agency reported Nov. 29.

Some 55,981 tons of agricultural products were also imported to the country via Astara from Russia and Georgia in the aforementioned period, he said.

Shalikar further noted that no significant change was made in agricultural products' export through Astara checkpoint compared to the preceding year.

Meanwhile import has increased by 11 percent during the 8-month period in comparison with the same months of last fiscal year, he added.

During this period the transit of agricultural products via Astara customs also registered a rise by 69 percent year on year, Shalikar said.

The country exported $6.6 billion worth of agricultural products in the last fiscal year (March 2014-March 2015), a 27 percent rise year on year, according to the Iranian deputy agriculture minister Abdolmehdi Bakhshandeh.

Meanwhile, agricultural imports amounted to $12 billion, a nine percent fall compared to its preceding year.
