Earthquake measuring 5,0 on the Richter scale hits Iranian province Ardebil on Sunday afternoon, ILNA agency reported.

Tremors were felt in Parsabad, that located in the border area with Azerbaijan. Information about the destruction and injuries were not reported. After the earthquake in the province was felt several aftershocks. State declared emergency situation in the village and sent rescuers to there.

On Aug.11, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake rocked Iran's East Azerbaijan Province, killing more than 300 people and injuring about 2,500.

The strongest earthquake in recent period occurred in December 2003 in the city of Bam, located in the southeast of Kerman province. The earthquake killed 31,000 people, destroyed ancient fortress, built of clay.

According to the Seismological Center at the Tehran University's Geophysics Institute, the epicentre of earthquake was in Azerbaijan city Shemakha.
