An issue on occupation of the Azerbaijani territory is still in the agenda of the UN General Assembly 63rd session and Azerbaijan continues to work with the member countries on this issue, Azerbaijani Permanent Representative to UN Agshin Mehdiyev told Trend on May 19.

In 2008, Azerbaijan submitted a resolution on occupation of the territories to the General Assembly. The UN Secretary General's report on the resolution has been developed and distributed, Mehdiyev said.

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's report on the "Situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan" which has been submitted to the UN General Assembly for examination consists of letters of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and several other UN member states with proposals on the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

In March 2008, the UN General Assembly in the resolution 62/243 called upon the member states and international and regional organizations "to effectively assist in the process of resolving the conflict within its competence". It asked the Secretary General to submit a comprehensive report on the implementation of this resolution to the 63rd session.

"We have also distributed a number of documents on the legal consequences of the Armenian aggression. This has been done in the form of an official document of the UN," the Ambassador said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.
