The new strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and the European Union will expand opportunities for the sides’ cooperation, the press service of the EU Office in Brussels told Azernews Feb. 14.

“The new agreement will broaden the scope of our relations, taking into account the new global, political and economic interests we share and challenges we want to face together,” said the press service.

“The negotiations should cover the full range of provisions for an eventual agreement, including 1) political provisions; 2) trade- provisions and; 3) sectorial policy (energy; environment; transport etc.) provisions,” according to the press service. “All are of equal importance to the EU. This also reflects Azerbaijan’s priorities and the contents of its own draft proposal for a new agreement, handed over during the Riga Eastern Partnership Summit in May 2015.”

It was noted that the launching round of negotiations took place as planned on Feb. in Brussels.

“The date for round 1 of negotiations has not been confirmed yet, but we expect this to take place in Azerbaijan in the spring,” said the press service. “Of course, the duration of the negotiations will depend on the progress made and cannot be predicted at this stage but our intention is to be efficient as well as ambitious.”
