BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 12. During a working visit to Belgium, Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bayramov, addressed at an unofficial meeting of the foreign ministers of Organization for Democracy and Economic Development (GUAM) member countries, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Trend.
Bayramov noted that, in light of global security concerns, especially those in the GUAM region, the organization can play a critical role as a platform for long-term peacemaking and development.
In this context, the significance of adhering to common commitments and principles of international law was emphasized.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Minister noted the country's support for the settlement of the situation around Ukraine within the norms of international law, including the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.
Saying that Azerbaijan will chair GUAM in 2024, Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized that during the presidency the country will make every effort to promote cooperation between member states in political, economic, trade, transport, communication, humanitarian, tourism, and other areas. In particular, the importance of using the potential of the countries of the region in the field of transport and communications, promotion of the GUAM transport corridor project in this direction, and its transformation into a significant part of the East-West transport corridor was emphasized.
Next year Azerbaijan will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), within the framework of which it is also planned to organize a GUAM event.
Noting that in the post-conflict period, a historical opportunity for peace and development has appeared in the South Caucasus region, Jeyhun Bayramov said that the full restoration of Azerbaijan's sovereignty over the internationally recognized territories of the country is one of the important milestones. Extensive information was also provided on the reconstruction and building works and peace efforts of our country.
In the course of the meeting, decisions were approved on the transfer of GUAM chairmanship to Azerbaijan for 2024, GUAM budget for 2024, and other matters.
