High-Level International Meeting between NGIC and Chinese institutions discusses evolving world order following COVID-19 pandemic

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept. 29

The Nizami Gajavi International Center (NGIC) joined with the China Public Diplomacy Association (CPDA) and a number of eminent Chinese organizations to hold the “LantingForum” in China, around the topic of the “International Order and Global Governance in the Post COVID-19 Era”. The forum was attended by China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Wang Yi, Former Japanese PM Fukuda Yasuo, former SG of the UN Ban-Ki Moon, and many eminent persons, including NGIC Board Co-chairs President Vaira Vike-Freiberga of Latvia, and Ismail Serageldin, former VP of the World Bank.

The Forum discussed the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic problems it had engendered and how the current situation called for bold leadership and moving to a new world order based on a rules-based multilateralism, that avoided slipping into a new Cold War between the US and China, and how a new globalization should be built on inclusivity and fair trade, as the world joins together to move from overcoming the pandemic towards the pursuit of Sustainable Development, as articulated in the SDGs and a proper response to the challenges of Climate Change.

The Participants noted with appreciation the support that President Xi of China and President Aliyev of Azerbaijan have been giving to the collaboration that led to this event. The participants also noted with sadness that as we talked of the evolving world order and the peace and prosperity it would bring, conflict had exploded once again on the borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and that the conflict on Nagorno-Karabakh had not been resolved despite UN Security Council Resolutions 822, 853, 874, 884 all calling for the respect of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan.
