New highways, renovated internal roads to bring Georgia closer to EU

BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 22

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Tbilisi-Sagarejo highway is an exceptional project, which Georgia plans to finance despite the COVID-19 pandemic and the depleted budget, said Minister for regional development and infrastructure Maia Tskitishvili, Trend reports via Georgian media.

She made the remark at the joint committee session.

"We are confident that similar projects make a significant contribution to the region's development and the country's economic growth," she noted.

The construction of the 15-km section of the Gurjaani road will wrap up in 2021, and the construction of a new 35-km Tbilisi-Sagarejo Road will begin.

Tskitishvili said new highways and renovated internal roads will bring Georgia closer to the European Union and its trade partners, create more opportunities to attract tourists in the region, and simplify launching different economic activities here.

The state will fund the construction of the Tbilisi-Sagarejo highway.

A tender for the construction of the Tbilisi-Sagarejo highway will open next year. Building the road falls within both countries' interests, as it is beneficial for the Azerbaijani-Georgia transit corridor. This road is of international significance, as, in addition to being the main road of Tbilisi and Kakheti, it functions as a transit corridor between the northern and western regions of Georgia and Azerbaijan.

The renovation of the old road and the construction of the new highway are both envisaged in the project.

The construction of the Tbilisi-Sagarejo section was funded by the World Bank, with the project being drawn up by Australian and US companies.
