The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has developed new projects for Azerbaijan, the USAID Mission Director in Azerbaijan Michael Greene told journalists on Tuesday.

"We prefer to support projects that focus mainly on the diversification of Azerbaijani economy, which is determined by the head of the state as the main direction of development. From this point of view, special attention is paid to agricultural direction that is both attractive and has the potential to provide technical and financial support for small farmers, small businesses engaged in processing, "head of USAID mission stated.

According to him, improvement of legislation, in particular the adoption of the Code of competition, is required for further development of business in the country.

"USAID projects in the field of agricultural development in Azerbaijan are being implemented over the past few years, but for the implementation of new planned projects, we started to define the sub-sectors, which will be given more attention, those are particularly the fields of dairy production, fisheries, fruit and nuts" Greene added.

In 2011, USAID has allocated $18.4 million to support more than 15 projects, including in the areas of democracy and governance, promotion of economic growth and health.
