The Uzbek government and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) have recently signed a financial agreement on the allocation of a loan on the modernisation of the irrigation system in the Khorezm region (north-west of the country) amounting to $90.4 million.
The agreement was signed during the Tashkent meeting of the Arab Coordination Group, which consists of the Islamic Development Bank, the Saudi Fund for Development, Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development and the OPEC Fund for International Development as well as the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development
The Uzbek government has reached a preliminary agreement with the IDB leaders for a joint project for the modernisation of the Tashsakin irrigation canal system.
The project provides for the rehabilitation of the Tashfaki main canal in the Tashsakin irrigation system, resulting in the provision of an uninterrupted water supply to irrigate land over a total area of 26 hectares.
Uzbekistan joined the IDB in 2003. During this time the bank allocated about $300 million for the country to implement 15 projects in the field of health, education, agriculture, energy, transport and support for private entrepreneurship.
To the present day the IDB and Uzbek government jointly implemented 10 projects at a total cost of $186.4 million and five projects worth $ 277.4 million are currently underway.
In June 2011, the IDB and Uzbek government signed a cooperation programme for 2011-2013, providing for the allocation of credits for a total of $655.5 million for the implementation of 11 projects in infrastructure, health, education and private business at a total cost of one billion dollars.
