Tehran exported over 654,000 tons of potato in the previous Iranian calendar year which ended March 20, Hassan Khadangi, an official with the Agricultural Jihad Ministry, said on Monday.

The figure shows a near 100 per cent increase compared to the preceding year, the IRNA News Agency quoted Khadangi as saying.

Iran's per capita potato consumption stands at 45 kilogrammes per year, he added.

Esmaeil Abbaspour, an official with the Agricultural Jihad Ministry said in February that Iran will not import potato in the current Iranian calendar year which started March 21.

The head of Iran's Union of Seed Potato Producers also said in February that the country currently produces 600,000 tons of potato above the nation's domestic consumption, so there is no need to import potato from neighbouring countries.
