The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway will attract additional cargo transportation from China to Europe through Kazakhstan, a source in the Ministry for Investment and Development of Kazakhstan told Trend.

“The operation of the railway will entail an increase of cargo traffic from China through the territory of Kazakhstan to 300,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) of containers.”

The source added that Kazakhstan’s freight flow through the Trans-Caspian route in the first half of 2017 was 80,800 tons of cargo and that the level of cargo transportation is expected to increase.

“The freight flow through the Trans-Caspian route will increase to 300,000 TEU by 2020.”

The BTK railway is based upon the Azerbaijani-Georgian-Turkish interstate agreement. The maximum volume of cargo transportation along the BTK corridor is projected at the level of 17 million tons of cargo per year. At the initial stage, this indicator will be one million passengers and 6.5 million tons of cargo per year.
