Trend:

Iran's Health Deputy Minister Alireza Raeisi has announced that any genetic attempt to change agricultural products is prohibited by the Health Ministry and the organization.

"The Health Ministry would resist any plan to implement genetic changes in agricultural products and the ministry would not allow the production of GMO's in the country," Trend reports citing Fars News Agency.

Referring to recent plan for GMO production in the country that was signed by members of Department of Environment he said that the Health Ministry would confirm the plan after reforms implementation in its context and if it's not harmful for health.

The genetically modified organism (GMO) products have been hot topic during past two years in Iran, despite growing opposition against GMO imports and consumption there have been some efforts to circulate these products in the country.

It is expected that Agriculture and Health Ministries decide over GMO's production in the country. While the Department of Environment has approved the plan, the Health Ministry has called on reforms in it and the Agriculture Ministry is waiting for the result.

Iran annually imports $5.5 billion worth of GMO's while some are being consumed without identification tag.
