Iran to free 2,800 prisoners on Ramadan
Iran will free 2,800 prisoners during Ramadan this year.
These are mostly individuals who were jailed for not repaying their debts, Iranian Prison Service Chief Gulamhuseyn Ismaili was quoted as saying by Khabaronline.Ir.
He added that some of their debts have already been paid using public funds, while others have simply been expunged and or paid by insurance companies.
"The government allocated $50 million to release prisoners in 2009," Ismaili said. "So far, $35 million have already been spent."
