Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili must find ways to communicate with each other and reach an agreement on righting wrongs, European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Fule told Liberal magazine.
Responding to the question as to whether Saakashvili uses EU and NATO issues in internal political conflict with the government, the commissioner said that he is not capable of such estimations.
"I can not give an estimate regarding who behaves how during this difficult situation. Once more, I would like to state very clearly that both sides need to ensure that Georgia is seen as a strong, responsible democracy at Vilnius summit in order to convince everyone that the country is ready for an association agreement with the EU and liberalization of the visa regime, "Fule said.
He said the president and prime minister have to prove that cohabitation will not be an obstacle to the process of convergence with the EU.
"They need to find ways to communicate with each other and agree on the correction of mistakes. A basis should be created for cohabitation, which is difficult per se and would not be easy even in a Western European democracy. This is certainly a big challenge for a country that recently managed to change power through peaceful and free elections. Both sides need to put the country's interests above of those of political parties and their own, "Stefan Fule said.
