Abbas: military operation in Gaza endangers peace process

Arab World Materials 23 December 2010 09:39 (UTC +04:00)

Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday warned of the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip, saying it will endanger the fragile peace process, Xinhua reported.

"Any new Israeli aggression on Gaza will put the entire peace process in danger and thwart all international efforts to rescue peace," Abbas said after he met with Christian Berger, the European Union's representative, in Ramallah.

Palestinian militants stepped up rocket attacks from Gaza into Israel, drawing calls from Israeli military and political officials to take measures to curb the rocket fire.

Israel launched a three-week military offensive in the Hamas- controlled Gaza Strip nearly two years ago, killing as many as 1, 400 Palestinians.

Meanwhile, Abbas urged the EU to put more efforts in reviving the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

Peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israel stopped in September, after Israel resumed building settlements in the occupied West Bank.
