A beefed-up force of rangers is patrolling a Democratic Republic of Congo national park that is home to endangered gorillas after a park ranger was shot and killed, CNN reported.

Mai-Mai rebels attacked a ranger station in the Virunga National Park Thursday night and killed ranger Safari Kakule, according to a news release from the park.

Another ranger was wounded in the attack, and one of the rebels was captured, the statement said.

"The Mai-Mai are a community-based militia group that do not have a specific political objective but are often involved in banditry and looting," the park statement said, adding that seven rangers were at a park station when the attack occurred.
