Iran says US-led coalition against IS nothing but pretence

Tehran, Iran, Dec. 21
By Milad Fashtami - Trend:

Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said that the US-led international coalition against Islamic State (IS, also referred to as ISIL or ISIS) is nothing more than a false pretence.

"Confronting terrorist groups is only possible through the contribution and resistance of nations," he said, Iran's Fars News Agency reported on Dec. 21.

"The latest developments show that the main goal of the countries that support the terrorists is nothing but to gain control over the region and drive Syria out of the resistance axis," he noted.

"The Iranian government supports a democratic political resolution to stop the terrorist killings in Syria," he said.

Larijani is currently in Syria on a one-day official visit, which is the first leg of his regional tour.

During his stay in Damascus, the Iranian official held separate meetings with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Parliament Speaker Mohammed Jihad Al-Laham.

The expansion of bilateral ties and the latest developments in Syria were on top of the agenda of the talks.

Larijani also plans to visit Lebanon and Iraq.
