Tehran, Iran, Dec. 28

Iran will use whatever diplomatic power it has to free Narges Kalbasi from prison in India, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in response to a letter by some celebrities, professors and lawyers.

“I assure you that our objective is her freedom from her current problems and a fair treatment,” Zarif wrote in a letter in answer, Mehr news agency reported December 28.

Born in Iran in 1989, Kalbasi moved to Britain at the age of 4. She lost her parents there. Later, she founded a charity center for orphans and disabled children in India.

Recently she was charged with murder after one of the children under her care drowned in a river during a camping trip.

On December 27, scores of students held demonstrations in Bangalore, India in support of the Iranian female philanthropist who has been sentenced to prison and paying damages by an Indian court.

The students held placards saying Kalbasi is innocent and her verdict should be repealed.

In a related move the same day, students in Vancouver, Canada published a call in support of Narges.

In his recent trip to India a few weeks ago, Zarif met with Kalbasi where they discussed the judicial case of the Iranian philanthropist.
