Azerbaijan, Baku, 20 January / Trend / Azerbaijan is commemorating the 19th anniversary of January 20th tragedy today.
The day Jan. 20, 1990 was a heroic page in the history of Azerbaijan's struggle for freedom and territorial integrity. The Soviet army launched an aggressive military attack against our nation as thousands of Azerbaijanis took to the streets to protest Armenia's territorial claims against our country.
The Soviet military operations resulted in an unprecedented tragedy as the valiant sons and daughters of Azerbaijan sacrificed their lives to place our freedom, honor and dignity above all.
The Jan. 20th tragedy affected the lives of thousands of innocent Azerbaijanis and demonstrated our inexorable spirit and pride as we fought against the Soviet policies that restricted our freedom. We achieved the independence that we had dreamed of for so many years before as a result.
Although years have passed since the tragedy, Azerbaijan remembers the dreadful event and expresses contempt at those who committed the tragedy.
Azerbaijan commemorates January 20th every year.
The day was immortalized in the memory of our nation as the Day of Shehids.
