Presentations of projects on HIV and AIDS in Azerbaijan, financed by the European Union, took place in Baku on Monday.

The event was opened by the head of the European Union's Baku office Roland Kobia, who spoke about the impact of AIDS, noting that the disease continues to claim the lives of many people, including children.

According to him, the EU is supporting the prevention of AIDS spreading in various formats. Kobia stressed the importance of informing people about the disease and the provision of appropriate treatment to those infected.

He said the EU is funding seven projects in Azerbaijan in this direction which are being implemented by local NGOs.

During the event, representatives from 'Leader' Women Association of Azerbaijan presented the project 'Programme for HIV / AIDS prevention among young women in rural areas of Azerbaijan, a social and cultural approach aimed at improving the education, information and opportunities'.

According to the project, a survey was carried out among 1800 respondents, with 69.5 per cent saying they have been informed about the disease, 28.5 per cent did not know about it. Some 95.1 per cent of respondents did not know what HIV is and some 94.1 per cent weren't informed as to what AIDS is.
