Latvian President Raimonds Vējonis presented credentials to Juris Maklakovs, new ambassador to Azerbaijan, the statement posted on the website of the president of Latvia said.

Earlier, Maklakovs served as Latvian ambassador to Kazakhstan. Azerbaijan will be the second country in Maklakovs's diplomatic career.

Maklakovs was born in 1964. He graduated from the Kaliningrad military aviation technical school. He graduated from the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy in 1992. He also graduated from the US Army War College.

He has taught at the Latvian National Defence Academy since 1993. He became a rector in July 2001.

He was appointed commander of the Air Force in 2004 and commander of the National Armed Forces of Latvia in July 2006.

Latvian ambassador to Azerbaijan Hardijs Baumanis died suddenly in April 2015.
