Azerbaijan has significant transit potential, which is not completely used, but it's going to be developed following launch of new projects, the national secretary of TRACECA in Azerbaijan, Akif Mustafayev stated on Monday.

"The country receives profit from transit, but it has a several times greater potential," Mustafayev added.

In his words, construction of new sea port in Alat village, where a large logistical centre will be constructed, will contribute to development of transit potential.

According to Mustafayev, location of Baku port in the city centre limits its facilities.

"A new port is being constructed to settle this problem," he noted.

Baku Tbilisi Kars railway project, which is designed to provide direct railway transportation between Azerbaijan and Baku, has important role in development of transit. The work of Central Asian countries on development of transport corridor from China to Central Asia, Caspian sea and Caucasus to Europe has been activated.

Baku Tbilisi Kars railway road is accelerating all these processes," he added.

The transit will positively impact other economic fields along with development of transportation field.

TRACECA is an international transport cooperation program between the EU and its Partner countries in Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia. It has a permanent Secretariat in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Currently, TRACECA member states are Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Moldova, Romania, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Ukraine and Iran.
