Turkmenistan building new greenhouses

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 26

By Jeila Aliyeva - Trend:

More than 150 greenhouses with a total area of 1,375 hectares are being built in the agricultural regions of Turkmenistan, Trend reports with reference to the “Turkmenistan: Zolotoy Vek” (Turkmenistan: Golden Age) newspaper.

Some farms in Turkmenistan’s private sector have already started growing vegetables and fruit and berry crops. At the same time, many farms began to grow tomatoes year-round in greenhouses.

More than 33,000 tons of tomatoes were collected from greenhouses since the beginning of 2020, which is several times more than a year ago. Tomatoes that are grown in Turkmenistan in greenhouses are actively exported. So, in 2020, the supply of tomatoes abroad amounted to about 17,000 tons.

Expanding the range of greenhouse vegetables and fruits will help to increase the export potential and the overall development of agriculture. Individual private farms have previously learned to grow bananas and citrus fruits. It is planned to start mass production of these types of products in the country this year.

Greenhouses in Turkmenistan play an important role in maintaining food security. Private agricultural producers of Turkmenistan provide the domestic and foreign markets with different varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, strawberries, and some other food products.
