BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 18. Azerbaijan putting a lot of emphasis on developing renewables in its territories liberated from Armenian occupation no doubt boosts the region’s energy independence, the European Secretariat of Climate Alliance told Trend.

Several years ago, Azerbaijan started to slowly evaluate its potential and after liberation in Karabakh, that area was also evaluated. According to preliminary information, in the liberated areas, Azerbaijan has a potential of 9,200 megawatts of solar and wind energy.

The Secretariat said that the shift towards sustainable energy will help us fight global heating globally.

“The connection is straightforward enough - the burning of fossil fuels is the root cause for global heating. To fight it, we need to stop relying on fossil fuels. This can be done by reducing the amount of energy we use generally and by ensuring that that which we do use comes from renewable sources. The benefits of such a shift are not only global - regionally you boost energy independence and security while encouraging the decentralization and thus democratization of the energy supply,” the Secretariat official said.

The official added that it also goes without saying that renewable energies also come with a fraction of the environmental risks in terms of pollution of air, land, soil, and food sources.

Climate Alliance was founded in 1990 when a group of 33 institutions comprised of 12 municipalities from Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as 6 indigenous organizations of the Amazon Basin met in Frankfurt, Germany, motivated to take action against the climatic changes taking place.

The organization's network has strong roots in the German speaking world, but its principles have drawn interest from municipalities across Europe from the very beginning. The Alliance now boasts representatives from almost all EU countries and has seen the opening of National Coordination offices to help support members in a total of six countries.
