BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 11. As part of COP29 in Baku, Trend News Agency proudly presents COP for Hope, a special project offering an unparalleled platform to hear from world leaders and trailblazers in politics, economics, science, and ecology, all united by a shared commitment to addressing today’s pressing climate challenges.
In an exclusive interview with Trend News Agency Taco Niet, a professor at Simon Fraser University in Canada stated that this conference is a really important factor in achieving positive climate outcomes around the world.
Taco Niet noted that he has researched the energy system and how certain systems work without fossil fuels.
“I think this conference is also incredibly large scale. A lot is going on on the first day of the conference. It's really interesting to see how climate finance is being discussed. I think this conference is a really important factor in achieving positive climate outcomes around the world. Canada is in a pretty good position in terms of decarbonization, but it's also really important to help other countries and make sure that other countries can move towards decarbonization. The information on this and the details are very interesting,” he said.
Taco Niet, who visited Azerbaijan for the first time, said the people here are very hospitable.
“Last night I took a walk around Icheri Sheher. I had the opportunity to get to know many interesting historical monuments more closely. I had not attended a COP event before. Discussions on climate change are very interesting here,” he said.
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to
the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will
last until November 22, opened in Baku today.
This event is the largest organized by Azerbaijan to date, and for
the first time, it is held in this region in Azerbaijan.
A top-level event - a summit of world leaders on climate action - will be held within COP29 on November 12-13.
The main expectation from COP29 is to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance.
In addition to being a top priority that creates the conditions for action, climate finance will also contribute to the 1.5°C commitment by bringing everyone together.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
