Ban on rice imports for Iran is necessary for supporting the domestic production, Iranian MP Mohammadreza Ahmadi said, Trend reports citing Mehr News Agency.
Referring to the increase in rice prices in recent weeks, Ahmadi, the representative of Gilan Province in the parliament, said the MPs had warned the parliament and the government about the possible raise in rice prices.
“The import of rice should be stopped in order to support domestic production," said Ahmadi.
He emphasized that the Ministry of Economy will make the final decision regarding the import of rice in the coming days.
He stressed that one of the reasons for the shortage of rice in the market and the increase in its price is the decrease in volume of agricultural products due to drought.
“The government must bring the rice market to a relative balance,” the MP said.
