Strong quake strikes Papua New Guinea

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake has struck Papua New Guinea, seismologists said in a new revision of earlier data, while no tsunami warning was issued, Press TV reported.

The quake struck Sunday with its epicenter on the western tip of New Britain Island, the US Geological Survey said.

The epicenter was at a depth of 183 kilometers (114 miles) reducing the likelihood of serious damage.

Papua New Guinea, which is poverty-stricken despite rich mineral deposits, sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.

After being ruled by three external powers since 1884, Papua New Guinea gained its independence from Australia in 1975.
