An Azerbaijani citizen was taken captive by Armenians and mercilessly killed, the State Commission for hostages, kidnapped and missing persons reported on Aug. 20.
When analyzing the state commission's information on those taken captive during Armenia's aggression against Azerbaijan, it was discovered that 39-year old Farhad Atakishiyev was mercilessly killed in captivity, the state commission reported.
The investigations revealed that the reason for the Armenian military' brutality against the resident of the Karkijahan settlement was the fact that he guarded Azerbaijani soldiers. Armenian military personnel believed that this had a great impact on their huge losses during their attack on the Karkijahan settlement in December 1991 and tortured Atakishiyev and tried to make him say "Karabakh belongs to the Armenians". However, as Atakishiyev feared neither torture nor death and said "Karabakh belongs and will belong to Azerbaijan", the Armenian aggressors killed him. During an examination, marks from 72 various forms of torture, each of which can cause death, were found on his body. The state commission submitted information collected on Farhad Atakishyev to the President of Azerbaijan and on July 28, 2009 the President posthumously awarded him the order of the "Azerbaijani Flag" by decree.
