Party of Azerbaijani Former President to Support Its Own Candidate

Azerbaijan, Baku, 1 March / corr. Trend S. Ilhamgizi, J. Babayeva/ Oppositional Social Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (SDPA) will nominate its own candidate for the presidential elections. "The name of the candidate will be disclosed at the meeting of the party to be held in spring," Araz Alizadeh, the co-chairman of SDPA said to Trend .

Eldar Namazov, the President of the For Azerbaijan public forum said to Trend on 1 March that during his visit to Russia he had met with Araz Mutallibov, the co-chairman of SDPA and the former president and that they had discussed presidential elections. Namazov did not comment on whether Mutallibov will support him in the elections.

The regular presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held in October 2008.

According to Alizadeh, SDPA will support only its candidate. He said that he does have any information on Namazov's visit with Mutallibov.

The co-chairmen of SDPA are Araz Alizadeh and Ayaz Mutallibov, the former president of Azerbaijan, who is in emigration in Russia at present.

Ayaz Mutallibov was elected the first president of Azerbaijan in 1991 when the country declared its independence. In 1992, when Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan came to power, he left the country and is living in Russia at present.

The former president is being searched on international level on the basis of the verdict of Prosecutor's Office of Azerbaijan. He is charged with the attempt to overthrow the government and other crimes.
