Azerbaijani opposition parties’ referendum agitation group not to unify

An agitation group formed by several Azerbaijani opposition parties will not join another opposition agitation group.

"We are prepared to cooperate with all agitation groups formed by opposition. However, our agitation group does not intend to join Movement for Garabag and Republic," the Great Azerbaijan Party's Chairman Elshad Musayev told Trend on Feb. 3.

The Union For Democracy and the Azerbaijan Independence Party did not attend a meeting of the Movement for Garabag and Republic on Feb. 3.

A total of 13 initiative groups have submitted signature lists to the Central Election Commissions (CEC).

The CEC registered New Azerbaijan, Shahar, Law and Democracy and Taraggi initiative groups as agitation.

Referendum will take place in Azerbaijan on March 18 to amend 29 Articles of the Constitution. The Constitution was adopted in 1995. Amendments and additions were made in 2002.

"Even if we receive such an appeal, we don't intend to join any group. We support cooperation with agitation groups under equal conditions," the GAP chairman said.

Musayeb said that they did not receive any official invitation to attend the meeting of the Movement for Garabag and Republic on Feb. 3.

Union for Democracy was founded by the opposition Classic Popular Front Party, Azadlig party and National Democracy Party after the 2005 parliamentary election. Great Azerbaijan Party joined the union in early Sept. 2008 and People's Party in Nov. The Union is advisory and cooperation body.

"Our agitation group did not send an official appeal on joining the Movement for Garabag and Republic. We knew about it from media," Information and Agitation Secretary of the Azerbaijan National Independence Party (ANIP) Ali Orujov said to Trend on Feb. 3.

Orujov said that if they receive such an appeal, they will decide after discussions at the party's board. "Our agitation group National Independence has not been officially invited to the today's meeting of the Movement for Garabag and Republic," Orujov said.

National Independence Party, founded in 1992, is the first officially registered political party in Azerbaijan. Etibar Mammadov was the founder and chairman of the party until 2004. At present, Mammadov is the deputy chairman of the International Democratic Society.
