Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 9 / Trend , J.Babayeva/

Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan and his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov are discussing ways to resolve the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict in Baku today, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry reported. The officials will hold talks to ensure security and bilateral cooperation.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Babacan will also meet with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. The Turkish prime minister's initiative to create the Caucasus Security and Stability Platform is also on the agenda.

Babacan arrived in Baku Sunday evening. Before his visit, he participated in the 45th Munich Security Conference.
