Azerbaijan is taking all efforts to strengthen the energy security of Europe and expects to export gas to Europe via Greece, the RIA News quoted Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev as saying.
"For more than a year the Azerbaijani natural gas is delivered to the Greek market, and then goes to Europe. There is no doubt that more can be done in this direction," Aliyev said after the meeting with Greek President Karolos Papulyas.
The energy safety is the priority issue for the international community, President Aliyev said.
Earlier Greece voiced a willingness to enlarge gas purchase in Azerbaijan. The exact export volume has not been reported.
Athens is interested in signing of a quadripartite agreement between Azerbaijan, Turkey, Greece and Italy for the transport of gas to Europe. Four countries are already participating in the gas pipeline transit package, which will connect Turkey with Western Europe. This will be one of the five main ways of gas transporting to the European Union.
The Azerbaijani and Greek ministries inked an agreement on abolition of double taxation, cooperation in the aviation industry and on cooperation in the field of technology, information and communications.
"Energy issues, investment, commerce, cultural and educational cooperation are priorities for both countries," Greek President said.
The Presidents also discussed the situation in the Caucasus, Middle East and Balkans.
The Presidents reviewed the Cyprus problem at the initiative of the Greek side and touched upon the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict on the initiative of Azerbaijan.Aliyev invited his Greek counterpart to visit Baku, the invitation was accepted.
Azerbaijani President arrived in Greece on Sunday for a three-day official visit.
