International organization to monitor referendum in Azerbaijan

A CIS observer mission will monitor the referendum in Azerbaijan.

CIS Executive Committee Executive Secretary Deputy Chairman Toktasan Buzubayev will visit Azerbaijan on March 6-19, Committee spokeswoman Maria Gutsalo told Trend over the phone from Minsk.

<> will hold a referendum on March 18 to amend the Constitution. The Constitution was adopted in 1995. Amendments and additions were made in 2002.

The Central Election Commission registered the New Azerbaijan, City, Progress, Law and Democracy and Civil Society initiative groups. The Prosperous Village, Free Speech, Azerbaijan People's Republic and National Independence groups were not registered.

The committee will open an office in Baku.

Yevgeniy Sloboda, chief of the CIS observer mission, will head the office.

The CIS mission will work in two formats.

A long-term mission will stay in the country from March 5-19 and short-term mission from March 16-17.
