Head of EU observation mission Hans-Jörg Haber made a proposal today in Ergneti to allow Georgians in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict to visit the graves of their relatives in the occupied territory. After the five-sided meeting, Haber told reporters that negotiations are continuing in this regard and expressed hope for understanding of the sides.
The next five-sided meeting on incident prevention was held in the village of Ergneti in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone on September 3. The meeting lasted five hours. It was held in the Geneva negotiations format and aims to develop mechanisms to prevent incidents in the conflict zone. Delegations from Georgia, Russia, Tskhinvali region, the EU and the UN are attending.
Representative of the Georgian side, head of the Analytical Department of the Georgian Interior Ministry, Shota Utiashvili, said after the meeting that it was failure to solve the issue of freeing 6 Georgians who were detained by Russian border guards for the "timber smuggling". "Our people were in the forest and collected firewood for the winter, during which they were detained," he said, stressing that from Tskhinvali, it was possible to only reach an agreement that Tbilisi will be informed about the location of the detainees.
The sides agreed to hold the next meeting in three weeks.
