Kazakhstan, Astana, Dec. 2 / Trend A. Maratov/
Organization of the Islamic Conference Chairman Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu stands for making joint efforts with the OSCE to strengthen peace and security.
"The sphere of cooperation between the OIC and OSCE is already wide, and we must use this opportunity based on interaction and consultations," Ihsanoglu said during his speech at the OSCE Astana summit today.
During this process, the ground will be laid to increase our cooperation, he said. The need has long existed to unite the efforts of the OIC and OSCE.
According to Ihsanoglu, the OIC is committed to principles of restraint and modernization.
"Resolving conflicts in the Muslim world would significantly contribute to maintaining stability and security in Europe," he said, stressing that the OIC focuses on conflicts in Somalia, Sudan and Afghanistan.
Security has become a main topic of discussions at the Astana summit. Over the years, the security situation has changed globally and the summit creates an opportunity for countries to discuss existing problems.
The summit is held under Kazakhstan's chairmanship of the OSCE, which will be transferred to Lithuania as of January.
Kazakhstan's OSCE chairmanship will become even more important when the country will head the OIC next year.
The heads of states and governments of OSCE member countries last convened in 1999 in Istanbul. As the OSCE is a consultative body, the only way to discuss urgent issues is to meet at such summits.
