Georgia concerns over situation in Belarus

Georgia is concerned over the situation occurred in Belarus, Georgian Security Council Secretary Giga Bokeria told journalists.

He said Belarus is a friendly country of Georgia, and these relationships are very important for Tbilisi.

"We clearly support the sovereignty of Belarus. Therefore, this situation has caused concern for us. We hope that the presidential candidates that were detained will be released," he said, adding that the continuation of the dialogue between Belarus and the EU, as well as Belarus and the United States, is very important.

Belarus held the presidential elections on Dec.19. After the elections opposition members, who were dissatisfied with the reports of the victory of Incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko, held an unauthorized rally in Minsk and stormed the Government House.

Police dispersed demonstrators and arrested 639 participants, including opposition leaders. Several Russian journalists are also among the detainees.
