The opening of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway is of great importance for Azerbaijan, Tahir Karimli, member of the Azerbaijani parliament, told Trend Oct. 31.
Karimli noted that this is a great historic event and Azerbaijan has proved that it is a major logistics center.
This project was implemented thanks to the activities of President Ilham Aliyev, said the MP adding that this project will ensure further economic growth in Azerbaijan, which will lead to an increase in the incomes of population and the opening of new jobs.
The official opening ceremony of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway was held in Baku Oct. 30. The BTK railway was constructed on the basis a Georgian-Azerbaijani-Turkish intergovernmental agreement. The railway’s peak capacity will be 17 million tons of cargo per year. At an initial stage, this figure will be one million passengers and 6.5 million tons of cargo.
