Azerbaijan will host a karate tournament to commemorate the 20 January tragedy, the Ministry of Youth and Sports said today.

According to the plan of activities, a tournament on a traditional form of karate will start at the Baku Sports Palace on Jan.15. In addition, on the same day the National Aviation Academy will start the tournament among the clubs of Koshiki Karate.

Koshiki Karate tournament will kick off on Jan.16 in the Locomotive sports society.

Azerbaijani Championship on VKC Karate will be held on Jan. 22-23 at the Olympic Sports Complex in Shamkir.

The Soviet Army commenced military operations against Azerbaijan early morning Jan. 20, 1990 before declaring a state of emergency. The tragedy claimed the lives of 137 people. Some 744 people were severely injured. About 841 people were illegally arrested. The Soviet troops destroyed 200 flats and houses, including ambulances, personal and state property.
