Turkey plans to build two additional reactors at the Afshin-Elbistan thermoelectric plant to reduce the use of natural gas in power generation. This was stated by the director general of Turkey's state-owned electricity generation company (Eüaş) Halil Alis, Cihan agency said on Monday.

According to Alis, the capacity of each reactor will be 1340 MW. Turkey is negotiating with three countries - China, the UAE and South Korea on the construction of reactors each of which will cost three billion dollars, he said.

"Turkey also intends to increase the share of coal in electricity generation. With the use of coal at the Afshin-Elbistan thermoelectric plant, electric power generation will amount to nine million kilowatt / hours," Alis said.

Construction of two new reactors at the thermoelectric plant will be implemented as part of an international treaty, or on the basis of a tender, Alis said.

Earlier the report of the Turkish State Electricity Transmission Company (TEIAS) said in October 2012 that electricity production in Turkey decreased by 6.1 per cent compared to the same month in 2011, amounting to 17.7 billion kilowatt / hours.

In January - October 2012, the production of electricity in Turkey increased by 5.8 per cent compared to the same period in 2011, amounting to 200.1 billion kilowatt / hours.
