Uzbekistan records twofold increase in transactions via POS terminals

TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, November 15. The number of transactions in Uzbekistan conducted through POS terminals reached 181.5 trillion soums ($15 billion) as of October 1, 2023, Trend reports.

As per data provided by Uzbekistan’s Central Bank, the recorded number reflects a 48.3 percent increase compared to the same period in 2022, when the bank recorded 122.1 trillion soums ($9.9 billion) worth of transactions through POS terminals.

The largest volume of these financial operations was completed by the following five banks:

Aloqabank: 37.1 trillion soums ($3 billion)

Ipoteka Bank: 13.8 trillion soums ($1.1 billion)

National Bank: 10.9 trillion soums ($886.8 million)

Agrobank 9.4 trillion soums ($764.8 million)

Kapitalbank 9.1 trillion soums ($740.3 million)

Meanwhile, the volume of plastic bank cards in circulation in Uzbekistan amounted to 41.4 million as of October 1, 2023, which is 30 percent more compared to the same period last year, when the volume of cards was fixed at 31.8 million.

Uzbekistan is actively promoting contactless payment systems by popularizing NFC technology in sales and service points throughout the country and by taking measures to provide QR codes in accordance with the requirements of trade and service points throughout the country.
