Nine killed in Iraq attacks

Nine people were killed in two attacks in Iraq on Monday, police and government officials said, dpa reported.

Five people were killed in a suicide car bombing targeting an elementary school in the western province of Anbar.

Three children were among those killed on the second day of the Iraqi school year, said Anbar province official Saadoun al-Shaalan to the al-Sumaria news website.

In Baghdad, a group of men opened fire on security personnel in a drive-by shooting at an entrance to the fortified Green Zone, home to government buildings and embassies. Four guards were killed in the attack.

Deadly attacks have increased in the country this year, raising fears of a return to the sectarian tensions that drove Iraq to the brink of civil war in 2006-07.
