( dpa ) - Kenya's Foreign Minister Raphael Tuju will meet with the UN Security Council "in coming days" to discuss the ethnic conflict that broke out after disputed elections in his country, the council president said Monday.
Tuju requested the meeting with the council in New York, which would be the first time Kenya takes the issue before the body since the post-election bloodshed tore the country apart.
Panama's UN Ambassador Ricardo Alberto Arias, the council's president for February, told reporters that the request was accepted by the body and Tuju would be at UN headquarters in New York soon.
More than 600 Kenyans have died in fighting since December's election results, which went in favour of incumbent Mwai Kibaki, were disputed by opposition leaders.
The UN has been assisting the hundreds of thousands of Kenyans who lost their homes, but has not been directly engaged in finding a solution to the political crisis. Former UN secretary general Kofi Annan has been on hand in Nairobi to mediate between the two sides.
