The speaker of an Indonesian provincial council died Tuesday after protestors carrying a mock coffin stormed into his office and attacked him, a report said.

Abdul Aziz Angkat, speaker of the North Sumatran provincial council, was meeting with other councillors when hundreds of protestors stormed the plenary room and beat him, the state Antara news agency said.

Angkat was rushed to a hospital but died of a heart attack, Antara said.

Police arrested six protestors after the attack.

The demonstrators were seeking the creation of a new province in North Sumatra's Tapanuli district after five local districts approved the proposal.

They were angry at what they see as the council's foot-dragging in approving the plan, reported dpa.
