Eurasian Economic Union has the potential to be quite a strong competitor to other centers of global economic gravity, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said.

Nazarbayev made the remarks at a lecture at the Lomonosov Moscow State University, the press service of Akorda (Kazakh presidential palace) said.

"Squall of various absurdities only emphasizes the potential and prospects of the idea of Eurasian integration," the president said.

The head of state noted that in today's world, there are several ongoing regional integration projects. However, none of them causes such ambiguous estimates as generated as the EAU does.

"I will say frankly that I see in such negative assessments, on the one hand, attempts to disguise the fear that the Eurasian Economic Union has the potential to be quite a strong competitor to other centers of global economic gravity. Essentially, in the language of rights, we are talking about the methods of unfair competition globally, at the stage of formation of our new integration association," Nazarbayev said.

As the president noted, by offering the Eurasian Union project 20 years ago, he foresaw that economic pragmatism will determine its success.

"I've always been and remain a sincere supporter of the famous formula "first - the economy, then - policy". This principle is comprehensive, spreading both the internal and foreign policy of our country," he said.
