Four killed in attacks across Iraq

Four people were killed on Sunday in a series of bomb and gunfire attacks across Iraq, security sources told dpa.

Clashes erupted in the northern city of Mosul when gunmen opened fire on a military checkpoint, killing two civilians who were near the scene, and injuring a woman.

Earlier Sunday, a woman was killed and four people injured in a bomb blast in central Mosul, which lies some 400 kilometres north of Baghdad.

In the southern Iraqi city of Kut, gunmen attacked a bus carrying government employees to their work, killing one passenger before escaping the scene.

Police also arrested 10 people in Baquba, about 60 kilometres north-east of Baghdad, for suspected involvement in recent criminal activity there.

Fears have grown among Iraqis about a surge in attacks since US troops completed their withdrawal from the country in December.

The violence comes as Iraq prepares to host the Arab League summit in late March, which will be Iraq's first pan-Arab conference in more than two decades.
