Prolonged Conflicts in GUAM Area to be Discussed in New York

Azerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend K.Ramazanova / Prolonged conflicts in the GUAM area and their implications for international peace, security, and development, and the situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan are expected to be discussed at the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly, the Assembly reported.

The Secretary General of GUAM, Valerie Chachashvili, informed Trend earlier that the issue of presenting the project of resolution on protracted conflicts in the GUAM area to the consideration of the UN General Assembly may be considered at the beginning of September. The next meeting of the national coordinators of 'Organization for Democracy and Economic' has been scheduled for this date. Azerbaijan will be represented at the meeting by the Deputy Foreign Minister, Araz Azimov.

The project of resolution on protracted conflicts in the GUAM area, especially on Pridnestrov`e ( Moldova), Nagorno-Karabakh ( Azerbaijan), and Georgian-Abkhazian conflicts, was devised and included in the agenda of the UN General Assembly at the end of 2006. This issue was taken out from the agenda by GUAM representatives themselves.

GUAM was formed by post-Soviet countries in 1997. In 2006, at the first summit of the organization in Kiev, the decision to announce GUAM as an international organization with a new name of 'Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM' was made. The second summit of GUAM was held in Baku on 18-19 June, 2007.
