A member of a criminal group that took Afghan citizens hostage has been arrested in the Iranian city of Salam.
The Afghans were released, the FARS news agency quotes Salam City Police Chief Shahrokh Bakhtiari as saying on Thursday.
A group of persons who took five Afghans hostage demanded $1,000 for each of them from their families. Police arrested one member when he received money from the family of a hostage. Knowing about the whereabouts of other Afghans, the police released them. A criminal case has been filed. The search continues for the other members of the
group.
The families of the Afghans held hostage live in the Iranian city of Qom.
