Azerbaijani Education Minister Misir Mardanov said the global financial crisis will impact the construction of new schools.
"The construction of unfinished schools will continue. Schools in emergency situations will also be repaired. But the construction will slow down this year," Mardanov told reporters.
A total of 161 schools were opened in 2008 and 129 schools underwent capital repairs.
Over 100 schools are expected to undergo capital repairs in 2009.
New schools will end the need for multi-shift days and create 5-day academic weeks.
The minister said the Electronic School project will be implemented at 20 schools in Baku and Sumgayit this year.
