BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 18. Azerbaijan is one of the leading countries in terms of joining international conventions, said Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan's Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources and COP29 President, Trend reports.
"We have joined 20 major conventions, covering key issues related to environmental and climate protection. These conventions are being successfully implemented in Azerbaijan. Our efforts extend not only within the Caucasus region but also through cooperation with Central Asian countries. Hosting such a significant event as COP29, the first of its kind in our region and the post-Soviet space, is a great responsibility for us," Babayev said in an interview with local media.
He added that, alongside climate negotiations, the event will provide an opportunity to discuss a wide range of environmental protection and ecological security issues.
"One of the main topics is climate finance. The focus will be on securing additional financial resources to address the climate agenda, combat climate change, and increase financial contributions to climate funds from participating countries," Babayev noted.
The 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will be held in Baku from November 11 to 22.
